Spyderco - Shaman Spyderco's new worker With the Shaman, Spyderco fired a real firecracker into the knife world towards the end of 2017. Some rumored that this knife would make the Paramilitary 2 obsolete. Well, we don't see it quite that way; however, it remains to be said that the Shaman, designed by company founder Sal Glesser himself, is in no way inferior to the great classic. Upon closer inspection, the 3D-milled G10 handle scales are the first thing that catches the eye. These are wonderfully rounded and nestle incredibly comfortably in the hand, so that even longer work is very comfortable. The steel plates embedded in the handle material are generously hollow, but still offer extremely high stability. Similar to the Paramilitary 2 or the Para 3, the blade of the Shaman was designed in such a way that there is an additional grip recess at the base for the index finger (finger choil). This ensures optimal power transmission as well as additional control over the cutting movement. For the blade, Spyderco have once again opted for CPM S30V. This powder metallurgical alloy was invented specifically for the manufacture of cutting tools and has proven itself thousands of times over the years. Since the steel is highly corrosion resistant, the blade is completely safe even in contact with food. One big difference from the Paramilitary 2 is, among other things, the blade thickness remains constant far to the tip, which makes for an incredibly robust blade geometry. The Compression Lock invented by Spyderco ensures a secure lock when open. Now, you might assume that it is a rear-mounted liner lock due to the operation - but that is not the case. The locking spring moves between the blade root and the stop pin of the blade. To destroy the lock, the vertically positioned liner would have to be crushed between the blade and the pin, which is highly unlikely. Clearly, Sal Glesser's signature is absolutely recognizable in the Shaman. Much of what we knew from the Paramilitary 2, the Native or the Para 3 can be found here again. Nevertheless, the Shaman is much more than just a best-of-Spyderco knife. Rather, you get here an incredibly robust work knife, which can also be used for harder cutting tasks without hesitation and despite its size and the not exactly low weight is a wonderful companion for everyday life.

Spyderco Para 3 A faithful companionMost major knife manufacturers have developed their classics over the years, which are simply indispensable from the program. Spyderco's Para Military 2 is one of them, along with several other models. But for some, this folding knife is a bit too big for everyday use, especially since there is a legal regulation in some US states that only allows blades up to a length of 3 inches. Spyderco have therefore put the PM2 on a diet and the result can now be admired in the form of the Para 3. Well, it's not quite that simple - after all, the Para 3 is much more than just a shrunken version of the classic.Despite the significantly smaller dimensions, the Para 3 also feels absolutely fantastic in the hand, especially when you use the finger choil at the base of the blade. This indentation allows one to guide the knife very close to the cutting edge and thus be able to transfer a lot of force to the cutting motion. The Compression Lock, which at first glance looks like a liner lock attached to the back, provides maximum security through its locking technology, which is due to the fact that here (unlike the liner lock) a part of the plate is pushed between the blade root and the stop pin. So to destroy the lock, the vertically positioned liner would have to be crushed between the blade and the pin, which is virtually impossible. The fully raised flat grind of the blade, which is made of CPM S45V steel, ensures optimal cutting performance and the fine tapered tip also allows for the most precise work. The blade length of exactly 3inches (hence the name of the knife) is still long enough to handle the vast majority of everyday cutting tasks with ease, yet still makes for a much more compact overall package compared to the Para Military 2. Together with the large lanyard hole and the reversible poket clip (making the knife perfectly suitable for left-handers), you get a really robust yet handy pocket knife with the Para 3, which proves to be an absolutely faithful companion in everyday life.

The Para Military 2 - or PM2 - is one of the most popular and versatile knives Spyderco has in its lineup. Originally introduced in 2010, this all-around knife has been improved upon over the years, making this cutting tool an absolutely mature design by now. The incredibly ergonomically shaped handle, is designed for maximum control when working with the knife and allows a variety of ways to guide the blade. Really great is the fingerchoil (an indentation at the base of the blade), which makes it possible to grip the knife very close to the cutting edge to transmit maximum force to the cutting movement. Thanks to the attached filing (jimping), you have an absolutely secure grip even in this position and the knife never threatens to slip away thanks to the gray G10 surface of the handle. The steel plates are recessed into the handle material and generously milled out to save weight. An absolute highlight of the PM2s is the Compression Lock. At first glance, this locking technology looks like a liner lock placed at the rear - but a closer look reveals that it is not. With Compression Lock, the liner moves between the blade root and the back stop pin. To destroy this lock, the steel liner would have to be squashed between the blade root and the pin, which is virtually impossible. This construction makes the Para Military 2 one of the most stable pocket knives on the market. In this version of the knife, the blade is made of the rather unusual Maxamet steel. This is a high-speed tool steel manufactured by Carpenter in the USA, which is not only impressively sharp thanks to its incredibly high carbon content, but also incredibly hard due to the composition of the alloy. Spyderco has a hardness of over 67 HRC, which is an incredibly high value in the pocket knife world. The result is a blade whose cutting edge has a very long service life and remains sharp for an amazingly long time.
